Core Principles of Ripon High School Leadership 2023-2024
Defined by Gia Grewal, Junior ASB Administrative Coordinator
The Ripon High Leadership program has implemented a flexible set of core principles to influence among the student body and the community. The core principles include, “ Be Impeccable," "Your Puzzle Piece Matters," "The Beacon of Empowerment," as well as "Evolve and Grow with Change.” Leadership exemplifies these core values in order to influence inclusivity, growth, and comfort within our community. In order to promote our values on campus, Leadership implements various activities, events, and acts of love and kindness so our staff and students can feel safe and welcomed.
As Student Council members on campus, we have to be role models. To “Be Impeccable” means to show up, to advocate for our peers, for ourselves, and to stick to our word and truths. One of the first agreements the leaders of Leadership acknowledged was that we never back down on our word. We promised one another that we advocate, we support each other, and we influence comfort and love on our campus. It can be seen in forms of a simple hello or a hug, and to the extent of some of our larger events. One event we hold on our campus to promote the idea of “ Be Impeccable” is The Challenge. The Challenge is a week in which the Leadership students have a month to plan the end of the year spirit week and dance, and throughout this week, the ASB Advisor is not present. So, the idea of being impeccable translates to being a leader during this time period. Students are delegated to complete their task. For example, various committees with leaders and an agenda are formed to create publicity (digitally and physically), plan the dance (organization, set-up, and clean up), and student and staff involvement. The Challenge is the last week of school and it exemplifies the idea of being consistent and following through our duties from the start to the finish. Through a student's perspective, our core principle, “ Be Impeccable” illustrates a persona of strength, humility, and confidence.
Regardless of the fact in which one may be a student, a staff member, or an individual apart of our community, Leadership promotes the core values of, “ Every Puzzle Piece Matters”. Leadership incorporates a group which promotes positivity and optimism on campus. A part of this promotion is the ability to create an inclusive environment on our campus. At Ripon High, we have various activities and acts of growth which promotes the value of “ Every Puzzle Piece Matters''. For instance, the MyIntent program allows students and staff to voice a perspective. They choose a word or a phrase which can remind them of their goal, a memory, a loved one, the possibilities are boundless. The MyIntent program contributes to the idea of individuality due to each bracelet being handcrafted by leadership students, personally given, and the bracelets are a highlight of the individual's opinion. Another way we promote our value of “ Every Puzzle Piece Matters” is by welcoming our students throughout the year regardless of the current duration of school times. Our initial school welcome events involving Club Rush allows students to choose a club which they find a choice and a voice to be themselves. Another event we plan is Gallery of The Arts which showcases beautiful art works. Art can be seen in the perspective of charcoal, acrylic paint, water-paint, sculptures, poems, music, and many other medians. In this event all of Ripon is invited to view the beautiful works of students at Ripon High and staff who have organized the music performance as well as the host game show. The core principle, “Every Puzzle Piece Matters” can be viewed as art as all our students can be found in different medians, yet all are beautiful in their own ways as they showcase their choices and creativity through a whirlwind of our world.
The core principles of being “ The Beacon of Empowerment” is meant to illustrate the idea of being a place, a vessel, and a person to seek comfort, advice, and peace. This core value encourages the students in Leadership to be a role model on campus and promote inclusivity so that empowerment can be spread throughout our community. Our Leadership program exemplifies the idea of community and growth through the core principle “ The Beacon of Empowerment” through our various choices in our program. After every event, our class decides to have a Pro/Con discussion; throughout this, we remember that we need to be optimistic and understanding of the group in charge. However, we are also critical and constructive to promote growth for future years and events. Another example of “ The Beacon of Empowerment” is our social media platforms. We promote our events, student and staff mental health, and an overall positive environment for our community. This core principle directs the idea of being a community and promotes inclusivity.
Our last core principle, “ Grow and Evolve With Change” promotes our community to work together for success. As a program, as a school, and as a community we grow and evolve with change. Recently, we’ve reestablished our Kyoto Exchange Student program. In this event, students from Kyoto Japan visit our school in order to fulfill the requirements needed to graduate. Therefore, the Leadership program does their best to create an inclusive environment for these students to feel welcomed on campus and in our community. However, due to COVID-19, this exchange event was put on hold for a few years. Nonetheless, this year we decided to revamp the program and had to grow along with the various changes made along the way. At Ripon High, the core values leadership has are not restricted to only our classroom. Instead, Leadership cannot necessarily be seen as a class but rather a group of students who promote inclusivity and growth among our students. We show up, we care, and we represent to further encourage is diverse, loving, and authentic environment.
