The Professional

Developing the Professional Leader

Picture
A leader is a person that is a positive role model that can influence others by their own personal actions. A leader must model the behavior desired by participating in the task at hand. In developing our young leaders, it is essential to teach/provide/guide them with tools that will allow them to become a professional. Our youth need to learn the mechanics of professionalism to take with them in their next adventure after high school. How can we have teachers expect success to occur if we do not provide the techniques to accomplish goals? It is valuable to incorporate curriculum within our leadership program that addresses and applies professionalism.
A very important question I ask my student leaders every year, whether they are new to the program or a veteran, is what kind of legacy do they want to leave behind? What is their brand? Kind, happy, giving, strong, fun, etc. It is a thought provoking idea that cannot be answered within a class period, a day, a week, a month, but could take years to figure out.

So the question is: What is your legacy, your contribution to this world?

The Five Levels of Leadership - John C. Maxwell ˆDeveloping the Leader Within You"

Level 1: Position
   a. The only influence you have in the beginning comes with a Title.
   b. Real leadership is being the person others will gladly and confidently follow. A real leader knows the                  difference between being the boss and being a leader.
   c. Our joy and success in leading others depend on our abilities to keep climbing the levels of leadership.

Level 2: Permission
   a. People don't care how much you know until they know how much you care. Leadership begins                            with the heart, not the head. It flourishes with a meaningful relationship, not more regulation.
   b. Leader to interrelationships
   c. People who are unable to build solid, lasting relationships will soon discover that they are unable to                    sustain long, effective leadership.
   d. Needless to say, you can love people without leading them, but you cannot lead people without loving            them.
   e. Relationships involve a process that provides the glue and much of the staying power for long-                            term consistent production.

Level 3: Production
   a. On the 'results' level, people come together to accomplish a purpose.

Level 4: People Development
   a. Loyalty to the leader reaches its highest peak when the follower has personally grown through
the mentor-ship of the leader. Therefore, the follower is loyal to the leader. You win people's hearts by
       helping them grow personally.
   b. The core of leaders who surround you should all be people you have personally touched or helped to
       develop in some way.
   c. Careful - moving up levels of influence as a leader and becoming comfortable with the group
of people you have developed around you...new people view you as a "position" leader because you have
had no contact with them. Walk slowly through the crowd - keeping in touch with everyone.

Level 5: Personhood
   a. Only a lifetime of prove leadership will allow us to see at this level.
